Augusto Boal, 1931 - 2009

This past Saturday, Augusto Boal passed away. This is a sad moment for all who work within the realm of Theatre of the Oppressed. He was a pioneer, an artist, an activist, a politician and a compassionate man whose accomplishments are truly amazing. As a Theatre of the Oppressed practitioner I have great hope for the future. Boal's work will live on in all of those practicing to change the world through activism and art with company's such as All Nations Theatre. I believe there is a responsibility to approach this task with humility, passion, integrity, and creativity. And as we shape Boal's work to fit our practice and the needs of the communities we work with, let's be open to the possibilities, the inventiveness of our own creativity, while staying true to the underlying philosophy of the work as it was originally intended. The willingness to take risks with the work will truly honour his legacy. And as we venture forth on our journey's, where we will make mistakes, where we will triumph, we shall never forget Boal.
